Handcrafted One at a Time
Your piece is shaped, sanded, assembled, and finished with attention to the natural character of the wood and how the piece will be used.
We regularly work with walnut, cherry, maple, white oak, beech wood, and other domestic hardwoods. Other species can be considered when they’re appropriate for the project.
Our preferred finish is Odie’s Oil because it protects the wood while allowing its natural color and grain to remain the focus. Other finishes can be considered when a project calls for something different.

Ballard Grain & Blade is a small woodworking business based in Beaverton, Oregon.
We aren’t a factory, and custom commissions aren’t pulled from a warehouse. Each piece is developed and built individually.
That means we can pay attention to the details that make a custom project worthwhile: proportions, grain selection, how an object will actually be used, how it relates to the surrounding space, and what will make it feel like it belongs in your home.

How Custom Orders Work
Start by sending us information about what you would like made, along with any photos, measurements, or inspiration you have.
We’ll review the project and talk through the design, materials, budget, and expected timeline. Custom commissions typically take approximately 3–8 weeks depending on the project’s complexity and the current shop schedule.
A 50% deposit begins the project, with the remaining balance due before shipping, delivery, or pickup.
Because every commission is different, pricing is based on the size, materials, and complexity of the actual project. Custom does not automatically mean dramatically more expensive than one of our made-to-order pieces.
